The Department of Anthropology, Philosophy and Social Work is one of the oldest departments at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV). In the 1980s a small group of anthropologists had already developed studies in the discipline at the local branch of the University of Barcelona in Tarragona. Then, when the URV was formally created, the Department of Anthropology and Philosophy was opened in 1992/93. This became the Department of Anthropology, Philosophy and Social Work in 2001/2002.
The Department is now involved in intense research and teaching activity. It comprises six ongoing educational programmes and the Social Anthropology Research Group (2014 SGR 308). This group has gained official recognition, receiving funds from the Catalan governmental agency responsible for universities since its first call for grants in 2001.
More than thirty faculty members and researchers work in the fields of Anthropology and Social Intervention via six educational programmes and a research group that has been officially recognized since 2001.
